About Barossa Trio:

The Barossa Trio  |  piano, flute, cello

Sarah Afshin Pour, Greg Pfeiffer and Shae Heinrich first played together in 2023 during casual engagements as accompanists with local choirs in the Barossa Valley. It was clear from the outset that there was a deep, intuitive understanding and responsiveness to each other’s musical ideas and expressions and so the Barossa Trio came into being. A regular rehearsal schedule was established and it was soon evident that their collective expertise enabled them to play transcriptions and arrangements of popular classics through to trios specifically written for their instrumentation. The inclusion of the conical wooden flute brings an air of ethereal transparency to the ensemble, which is particularly effective in baroque, traditional and popular music but also appropriate for some classical and romantic repertoire. As chamber ensembles of this nature are quite rare in the Barossa Valley it wasn’t long before performance opportunities began to present themselves. Now, the Barossa Trio is curating programs for a wide variety of performances and venues and is genuinely excited about sharing their love of chamber music and their evolving bond with it.

Sarah Afshin Pour (nee Wegner)  |  piano

Sarah Afshin Pour’s earliest memory of the piano was at home in the Riverland at the age of 3 or 4 when her parents bought an old upright piano. Her music loving family would often visit her great-aunty Norma who taught her to play ‘Chopsticks’. She would always ask to play the piano whenever she was at Norma’s house and was very much encouraged by her parents and grandparents for whom she loved to play. Later at high school her passion led her to study with Karyn Skewes, a recipient of the prestigious Yamaha Piano Teacher’s Award. Karyn prepared Sarah for her entry audition into the Elder Conservatorium of Music. She graduated in 2004 with a BMusEd and a DipLang (German and later went onto study Persian). Her piano teachers at the ‘Con’ were Lucinda Collins and Stefan Ammer, while Leslie Lewis taught her the harpsichord – ‘very exciting times!’ Sarah’s taste has always been eclectic with her heart most at home playing Beethoven and Chopin. In 2013 she was invited to perform at a memorable recital held in Tehran while visiting her mother-in-law. Sarah has found great joy in preparing and performing in school musicals, local choirs and ensembles. Sarah also enjoys guiding and encouraging her students’ growth by helping them connect emotionally to music—as a high school music teacher, wellbeing leader and private piano teacher.

Greg Pfeiffer  |  baroque flute

Greg Pfeiffer was awarded a Certificate in Advanced Music (percussion) at Flinders Street School of Music in Adelaide followed by a BAMus (jazz) at the SA CAE. While working professionally as a musician in Sydney through the 1980’s he studied recorder with Howard Oberg at the Sydney Conservatorium and was encouraged by the renowned flautist Kate Clark ‘to give the baroque flute a go!’ This sowed the seed of Greg’s love of the baroque flute and its music. After his time in Sydney, Greg studied at Luther Seminary in North Adelaide gaining a Bachelor of Theology followed by the Graduate Diploma in Ministry and was ordained in 1996 as a minister of the LCANZ. He served various congregations in South Australia and in Western Australia where he was elected District Bishop from 2008 to 2017. Since his retirement in 2017, Greg has been exploring the repertoire of the baroque flute and enjoys playing in several ensembles in the Barossa Valley and Adelaide.

Shae Heinrich (nee Grieger)  |  cello

Shae Heinrich’s love of the cello began at the age of 7 when she was encouraged to team up with her violin and piano playing older sisters and occasionally her brother on drums. Together the sisters loved travelling weekly from their home in Swan Reach to Faith Lutheran College for lessons with the Russian string teacher Eve Boreykina. At the age of 13 after successfully auditioning for St Peters College annual Music Camp she enjoyed performing the Pirates of the Caribbean film music with the Alexander Orchestra under the baton of the cellist, educator and conductor Brendon Pearn.  Over the years she has studied with Sophie Radke now with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and with the renowned cello teacher Teresa O’brien. During her formative years she was introduced to the music of her favourite composers namely JS Bach, Beethoven and Elgar particularly as they were performed by Jacqueline du Pré, Yo-Yo Ma and Sheku Kanneh-Mason saying: ‘I love their sound and the way they make the cello sing!’ Now while raising a young family Shae continues to make her cello ‘sing’ regularly in the Barossa Valley music scene.
