The next Kaffee und Kuchen meeting of the Barossa German Language Association will be held at the Langmeil Centre, 7 Maria Street, Tanunda on Monday, 24 April, starting at 1pm.

We invited Helena Weyland to be our guest speaker this month. Helena is the DAAD German Language Teaching Assistant in the German Department of the University of Adelaide. She is visiting the faculty as part of her Master studies at the University of Cologne and will talk about Köln and the celebration of Karneval there.

Here’s just quick overview:

Helena Weyland

Born near Frankfurt, moved to Cologne in 2018 because of her studies

Bachelor Degree in Teacher Education: Special Education with focus on deaf studies and emotional development

At the moment: Master studies in Intercultural Education and Communication

Work experience: Schools, Refugee Help, being part of an association for adult people with a disability, different internships (worth mentioning is only my position as teacher assistant at the German International School in Doha, Qatar). Working at the Centre for Teacher Education Cologne since 2019 and planning on going back there as soon as I go back to Germany.

Academic interests: Bachelor thesis about requalification of refugee teachers (Preis für Integration und Bildung), pedagogy in a society of migration, inequality in education, antiracism and antidiscrimination, gender studies, postcolonial studies, affect logic/affect theories. Planning to do a master thesis on the topic of Anger in Universities.
