Guest speaker Kateryna Katsman will talk about her PhD at the University of Adelaide with the topic “Das Barossadeutsch – Heritage Language. Language documentation and analysis”. This project documents Barossa German through several interviews with the remaining speakers and investigates the language in use in naturally occurring social contexts.
Who are the Speakers of Barossa German? What spoken and written German varieties have been maintained across generations to the present? Who are the remaining speakers of Barossa German? When and for what purpose was German used in the past and how is it used today? How can the documentation of Barossa German be used for language revival?

Gastrednerin Kateryna Katsman studierte Sprachwissenschaft und Germanistik an den Universitäten Adelaide und Konstanz. Seit ihrem Abschluss ist sie an der Universität von Adelaide tätig und arbeitet unter der Leitung von Dr Peter Mickan an ihrer Doktorarbeit zum Thema ‘Barossadeutsch’. Dieses Projekt dokumentiert Barossadeutsch durch verschiedene Interviews mit den Sprechern und untersucht den natürlichen Sprachgebrauch im sozialen Kontext.
